A significant proportion of current crime affecting our communities is in some way drug or alcohol related. That certainly appears to be the case with thefts, many of which are committed by people who need ready cash to feed their drug habit. Alcohol misuse features regularly in a variety of crimes and offences.
In Dumfries and Galloway, heroin is the drug predominantly associated with serious misuse and related crime but changing patterns in drug trends are constantly monitored.
Police Scotland tackles drug and alcohol misuse through both enforcement and education. One agency cannot tackle the problem alone and we work in partnership with a range of other agencies. We also support the strategies of the Dumfries and Galloway Alcohol and Drug Action Team and the Scottish Crime and Drugs Enforcement Agency.
Drugs are a problem that need to be tackled by communities as a whole. The help of the public is essential to our efforts to target drug abusers and those who supply drugs. We actively encourage a flow of information to the police from both the public and our own staff. This intelligence is the basis for most of our drug enforcement activity.
